We continue celebrating National School Counselor Week on this #WarriorWednesday by recognizing Cami Hartman and her trusty sidekick, Scone! We love this dynamic duo!
How many years have you been at SHS?
11th year at SHS, 4 years at Jefferson
What is a cherished memory at SHS?
I’ve met so many amazing students, parents, and staff while at SHS. A favorite memory was when I receive approval to start the SPS Therapy Dog Program.
What is the best part about being a school counselor?
The best part of being a school counselor is making connections with students. I also work with an amazing team of school counselors, and I enjoy building our program together.
What is one thing you want SHS students to always remember?
One thing I would want students to remember is we never know what others are going through. Be respectful, kind and empathetic.

In honor of National School Counseling Week, next up, we celebrate Jeff Gale!
How many years have you been at SHS?
12 years
What is a cherished memory at SHS?
Winning teacher of the year last year was an incredible honor
What is the best part about being a school counselor?
I always get to be on the team of the student, and I greatly enjoy it. I love being able to advocate and help students to navigate those difficult decisions in hopes of starting the next chapter of their lives in the best place possible.
What is one thing you want SHS students to always remember?
That it is never too late to change your situation, and to control what you can control. Sometimes life throws so many things at us it is difficult to know where to start, and it rarely matters where we start, as long as we start.

HAPPY NATIONAL SCHOOL COUNSELOR WEEK! In honor of this week, each day we will share a post about our wonderful counseling team here at SHS.
First up, Christine Herron!
How many years have you been at SHS?
5 years
What is a cherished memory at SHS?
Graduations each year, but especially the year I got a special shout out in Sonia Rodriguez's graduation speech. It was unexpected, and it was special to see how far she's come. It made me feel like I'm here for a reason, and this is my why.
What is the best part about being a school counselor?
Connecting with my students, building rapport with them, seeing them in and out of the classroom, and watching them grow into their full potential!
What is one thing you want SHS students to always remember?
You are capable of more than you know.

Sterling Public Schools is canceling school today, Tuesday January 23rd.
This decision is based on the snow and ice wintery mix that impacted our area last night and this morning. That poor weather left our country roads extremely icy and almost impossible for our school buses to navigate. I am aware that this decision is difficult on our families, and that some of our main roads are drivable. Please know that I made this decision this morning based on the condition of our district’s country roads and would not have made it if they weren’t so severe. We bus nearly 60% of our students, therefore, if we had school today it would have negatively impacted the safety of our students and staff.

Attached is the 2-hour late start schedule for Monday, 1/22. Please note that the school day ends at 3:00 PM. Bus times are normal time.

This is Sterling Public Schools emailing to inform you that school is in session today, Monday, January 22nd, but due to icy road conditions caused by the inclement weather, we will be running our 2-hour late start schedule this morning. This means all of our schools will start two hours later than normal, and all of our bus routes will be running two hours later than normal, as well.
This decision is based on the National Weather Service’s Severe report of a wintry mix of rain, sleet, freezing rain and snow across our area. With these conditions, our country roads are extremely dangerous, making bus routes difficult to navigate.
Due to the 2-hour late start schedule, breakfast will not be served at any of the schools this morning. Additionally, there will be no AM PreK Program classes at Franklin Elem. and Jefferson Elem. this morning.

SPS 2 hour late start school start times:
Jefferson and Franklin: 10:15
Lincoln and Washington: 10:05
CMS: 9:50
SHS: 10:00
Bus routes will be two hours later than regular scheduled time. There is no AM preschool.

It’s that time of year! 🎗️the 10th Annual Crazy for a Cure!
If you or someone you know is interested in donating a basket or baked good for the Crazy for a Cure 🏀 game on Friday, Feb 9, please let Mrs. Ruiz or Mrs. Schlemmer know!
Shirts are also on sale for $12
youth through XL and $14 for extended sizes! Orders are due Jan 29! Please contact Mrs. Schlemmer or Mrs. Ruiz to place an order!
All proceeds go to local cancer patients and programs.

Sterling Public Schools has canceled for tomorrow, Tuesday January 16th.
This decision is based on the extreme cold windchill temperatures that will reach 30 to 40 below zero tomorrow morning in Sterling. In fact, the National Weather Service has issued both a Severe Wind Chill Advisory and a Hazardous Weather Advisory for Sterling.
We wanted to communicate this decision tonight so our families could make plans for child care tomorrow. Stay safe and stay warm!

Sterling Public Schools has been canceled for tomorrow, Friday January 12th.
This decision is based on the National Weather Service’s Severe Winter Storm Warning for Sterling, IL where they are forecasting snow amounts between 6 and 12 inches then followed by 40 mph winds. With these conditions, our country roads will be extremely dangerous, making bus routes almost impossible to travel. We wanted to communicate this decision tonight so families could make plans for child care tomorrow.
