Counseling Groups

Grief: Learning to Cope with Loss - Grief is our reaction to loss, whether it be a friend, family member, loss of a pet, employment, safety, or possessions. Everyone responds to grief in their own way.

During our eight week sessions, we will be focusing on providing a safe, supportive atmosphere to explore the many factors of grief. It is important to understand and learn from the process of mourning and use the experience to promote personal growth.

The objectives of the group are: to provide information on grief and how it affects us, encourage group members to talk about and express their feelings, explore grief related issues, and finally to examine each student's support system.

Conflict Resolution - Do you find that as students you are constantly arguing with peers, teachers, or family members? If you wish to break this habit, then this is the group for you!

During our six week session we will focus on ways to properly resolve conflict. Topics discussed will include: stress, anger, coping skills, self-control, problem solving skills, and building and developing relationships. A signed permission slip is necessary in order to attend this group.

Divorce - Divorce can be a very devastating time for families, and there are often many strong emotions that go with it. The counselors will be facilitating a group with the purpose of helping students develop strategies that will help them cope more effectively with emotions brought on by divorce, as well as problem solving techniques that can be applied to real life situations. Parts of the group will include sharing and discussions, as well as learning and practicing specific techniques.

Drug and Alcohol: Making Positive Choices - Our drug and alcohol group focuses on the choices we make and how the can affect our lives. This discussion based group looks into the reasoning behind the choices that we make and how we can avoid and/or overcome substances that put us in danger physically, mentally, emotionally, and legally.

In this safe, controlled environment group members, with a counselor leading, will be able to discuss the reasons behind their decisions regarding substances and work with each other to more safely handle the urge and pressures for using drugs and/or alcohol.

Senior Lunches - Seniors! Bring your lunch and join the counselors for a helpful and informational lunch regarding various topics about the college application process. Some topics to look forward to include: writing your personal statement/application essay, letters of recommendation, financial aid and scholarships, among many more. Senior Lunches will be held throughout the year in the counseling conference room. Check announcements and daily bulletin for dates.
