What are the 40 Developmental Assets?

The Developmental ASSETS are 40 common sense, positive experiences and qualities that help influence choices young people make and help them become caring, responsible adults. Studies show that the more Developmental ASSETS a child has the more likely they are to not engage in risky behavior such as drugs, sex and violence. Assets have power for all young people, regardless of gender, economic status, family or race/ethnicity.

The community has monthly meetings to talk about how we can develop our youth's assets. We will have a monthly asset along with ways to develop those assets. Even if you are not a youth there are ways you can help. Our next monthly meeting is March 10th at 1:00. The location of our meetings is at Woodlawn Arts Academy. Does your youth have three or more non parent adults? These non parent adults can be teachers, people from church, coaches, etc. Can you think of any others? New Cell Phone Laws

Effective date: January 1, 2010 - A person may not operate a motor vehicle on a roadway while using an electronic communication device to compose, send or read and electronic message. A violation is an offense against traffic regulations governing the movement of vehicles. A person, regardless of age, may not use a wireless telephone at any time while operating a motor vehicle on a roadway in a school speed zone established under Section 11-605, or on a highway in a construction or maintenance speed zone established under Section 11-605.1.

This does not apply to a driver using an electronic communication device for the sole purpose of reporting an emergency situation and continued communication with emergency personnel during the emergency situation; or a driver using an electronic communication device in hands-free or voice-activated mode.

Teen Reach

Teen Reach is a program offered thru Sterling Public Schools in conjunction with the YMCA, Sterling Park District and Woodlawn Arts Academy. Students meet after school from 2:50 - 5:30 p.m. every week day. Monday students go to Woodlawn Arts Academy, Tuesday students remain at CMS for academic help, Wednesday students go to the YMCA, Thursday students remain at CMS for academic help and Friday students go to the Sterling Park District.
